The Ultimate Armstrong Buyer’s Guide

Find your perfect setup without getting lost in technical specifications. Built from FoilLab’s real-world Armstrong testing in Mui Ne.

Choosing a foil setup can feel overwhelming. At FoilLab, premium equipment should feel simple, enjoyable and properly matched to the rider.

We have tested the complete Armstrong range in Mui Ne’s varied conditions, from light morning breezes to strong afternoon thermals, flat-water freeride sessions, rolling ocean swell and downwind adventures.

This guide brings that experience together to help you choose the right equipment for your weight, ability and riding goals. Our objective is not to sell you the most expensive gear. It is to help you build a setup you will love riding every time you go on the water.

Step 1

Choose your riding style.

Start with the session you want most often. Then tune foil size, board volume and wing size around your body weight and local wind.

Recommended

Everyday freeride

  • MA Mk II Front Foil
  • Surf Mk II Stabilizer
  • Performance Mast Mk II
  • Titanium 60 Fuselage
  • FG Wing Board
  • A-Wing XPS Mk II

This offers the best balance of early lift, speed, carving and control. It suits the widest range of riders and conditions.

Recommended

Wave riding

  • MA Mk II in smaller sizes or S1 Front Foil
  • Dart Stabilizer
  • Performance-X Mast
  • FG Wing Board
  • A-Wing XPS Mk II

Quick turning, precise control and excellent drift, allowing the wing to disappear while you focus on the wave.

Recommended

Light-wind wing foiling

  • HA Front Foil
  • Speed Stabilizer
  • Performance-X Mast
  • Midlength Mk II X-Form
  • A-Wing XPS Mk II 5.5 or 6.0

Generates lift earlier, carries speed efficiently and lets you ride with smaller inputs and less effort.

Recommended

Downwind & parawing

  • HA Front Foil
  • Speed Stabilizer
  • Performance-X Mast
  • Downwind Mk III X-Form
  • Titanium 60 Fuselage

Maximum glide, efficient pumping and excellent open-ocean performance for connecting swell over distance.

Recommended

Foil Drive

  • Midlength Mk II X-Form
  • HA or MA Mk II Front Foil
  • Speed or Surf Mk II Stabilizer
  • Performance Mast Mk II
  • Titanium 60 Fuselage

A balanced assist setup that works exceptionally well with Foil Drive while staying versatile for unassisted sessions.

Step 2

Choose your skill level.

Progression equipment should give you confidence now and still make sense as your riding improves.

Beginner

  • Stability
  • Easy take-offs
  • Predictable handling
  • Forgiving equipment
  • Larger MA Mk II, Surf Mk II, generous FG board volume and Performance Mast Mk II

Intermediate

  • Earlier take-offs
  • Faster progression
  • Better carving
  • Improved pumping
  • Fine-tuned board volume and foil size

Advanced

  • Precision
  • Efficiency
  • Performance
  • Specialised wave, light-wind or downwind equipment
Step 3

Choose your weight range.

Weight changes board volume, front foil area and wing size. It is a starting point, not the whole answer.

Under 70 kg

  • Smaller front foils
  • Smaller board volumes
  • Smaller wings
  • Compact equipment can still deliver strong low-end performance

70–85 kg

  • Armstrong’s lineup works especially well here
  • A balanced three-wing quiver covers most conditions
  • MA Mk II plus FG or Midlength is a strong base

85–100 kg

  • Slightly larger board volumes
  • Larger front foils when learning
  • Larger wing sizes for light wind
  • Reduce board volume gradually as skill improves

Over 100 kg

  • Early lift and stability become especially important
  • Larger Midlength or FG board
  • Appropriately sized HA or MA Mk II foil
Step 4

Build your quiver.

A strong quiver avoids overlap and gives every board a clear job.

One-board quiver

  • FG Wing Board
  • MA Mk II
  • Surf Mk II
  • Performance Mast Mk II
  • Titanium 60
  • Three A-Wings

Two-board quiver

  • Board 1: FG Wing Board
  • Board 2: Midlength Mk II X-Form
  • Ideal balance for passionate riders
  • Covers almost every wind strength and riding style

Ultimate three-board quiver

  • FG Wing Board
  • Midlength Mk II X-Form
  • Downwind Mk III X-Form
  • With the right foil combinations, this covers nearly everything
Common mistakes

Avoid the expensive detours.

Most poor setup choices come from buying too small, chasing speed early or ignoring local conditions.

Buying too small

Many riders buy equipment that is too advanced. Slightly more volume often accelerates progression.

Buying only for today

Think about where you will be in twelve months. The best equipment grows with your skills.

Chasing speed too early

Speed naturally follows good technique. Focus first on efficient take-offs, carving and control.

Ignoring local conditions

The best setup in Maui may not be the best setup in Mui Ne. Wind, swell and water state matter.
